Your trip begins in Turku, Finland's oldest city. You can arrive by train, bus or flight from Helsinki and other cities in Finland, or by ship from Stockholm. At our shop you pickup your rental bicycles if you don't have your own. Pannier bags and repair kits are included, as well as bike helmets if you want. There are a lot of historical and cultural attractions to enjoy in town, especially around the Aura river. Most important sights are the Turku castle and the Cathedral church.
From Turku you bike a short distance to Naantali, the historical spa town. There is a beautiful harbour here with seaside restaurants, kid's theme island "Moomin World", and the medieval Naantali Church.
After getting out of town, you bike through forests along several islands connected by bridges, and take two small ferries until you reach the beautiful island Velkuanmaa, where you'll be accommodated for the night in Island hotel Vaihela. They have a restaurant and a wine cellar.
After breakfast in your hotel, you continue by ferry to Kustavi (Gustavs), for more pleasant biking in the Finnish archipelago, going to Vuosnainen port. On the way you can make a detour to visit the Kustavi museum or the strange boulders called "Caves of Jeremiah".
Leaving Vuosnainen on one of the island ferries, you'll soon arrive in the Northernmost part of the Åland Islands, Brändö. In the middle of Brändö, you'll find the small island hotel Gullvivan, where you'll stay the night. They have a restaurant.
As an extra you can book a seal safari for when you arrive in Brändö, to go out by boat and take a look at the big and small critters, and enjoy dinner in the wild.
The morning ferry from Brändö takes a couple of hours through beautiful scenery and passes by several smaller islands. From the harbour in Vårdö you can make a detour on the beautiful Simskäla road before you bike to the Bomarsund ruins. This is an open air museum among what was once a mighty Russian fortress. There's also a newly built visitor's centre here.
A few kilometres more in the saddle and you arrive at the Kastelholm castle, which is one of the most popular attractions in Åland. During summer season a guided tour is included in your entry ticket. After the castle you continue up north to Kvarnbo, to check in at Saltvik B&B.
You begin the day with a proper breakfast and start biking to the south for the town of Mariehamn. Here you will find many cafés and restaurants to choose between for your lunch and dinner. In Mariehamn you must visit the Maritime Museum and the old tall ship Pommern, docked right next to the museum. Sailing and maritime life is the very core of the local culture in Åland.
You will be accommodated in neat rooms at Strandnäs Hotel, located on a calm street North of the town centre.
South of Mariehamn one of the most beautiful roads in Åland brings you to Järsö. You can bike with the sea on both sides out here and have a coffee at Stickstugan Café before returning to Mariehamn.
After breakfast you bike through southern Åland to the port Långnäs, where a ferry will bring you to Kökar in the outer archipelago. On your way you'll cross the Lemström canal and pass the preserved estate Pellas.
The ferry cruises between islands for about three hours and you'll have plenty of time to relax and enjoy the view before reaching Kökar. This small community in the outermost archipelago is one of the most beloved places to visit in Åland. If you arrive during weekend you can go on a boat tour out to the island Källskär. There's something for everyone in Kökar: Museums, restaurants, hiking trails, bird watching, kayaking, and sunbathing.
You'll spend the night in Klobbars Guesthouse in Hellsö.
After breakfast you have the morning to continue explore Kökar. Around lunchtime you take the next ferry from Kökar to Korpo and are back in Finland. You continue along the archipelago trail towards Nauvo. The Bakfickan restaurant at Hotel Nestor is on the way. You can make a detour to Korpoström Archipelago Centre and the southern archipelago of Nauvo if you'd like some extra biking. You are accommodated in a hotel room in central Nauvo or outside Nauvo.
Ferry from Nauvo to Hanka in the morning after breakfast. Afterwards you will bike in direction Naantali. Stop by in Herrankukkaro for some fun outdoor games and challenges!
Right before coming back to Naantali you can make a small detour to visit the gardens of Gullranda palace, which is the summer estate of the President of Finland.
The trip continues through Naantali back to Turku, the same way from which you came. You can also cheat by taking a bicycle ferry directly from Nauvo to Turku.
For a truly outstanding experience, you can stay in Spa Hotel Naantali for the night before going back to Turku. This luxurious spa has been awarded Finland's best hotel in 2019 and offers many options of pools, saunas, spas and restaurants.
