This tour package includes travel to Mariehamn by modern cruise ships from Stockholm or Turku. You'll depart in the morning and can enjoy the splendid views over the Baltic sea and archipelago from deck. During your journey you can eat a breakfast buffet on board and stock up on duty free goods.
After arriving in Mariehamn in the early afternoon you go to collect your bikes next to the ferry terminal. Nearby you can visit the Åland Maritime Museum and the tall ship Pommern, docked by the museum. Seafaring and sailing have always been a central part of life for the people of Åland, and no place is better than here to learn about this rich history.
Two kilometers North of the town centre, you'll check in at Strandnäs Hotell, situated on a calm street. During the evening you can stroll or bike through the beautiful city, and visit the Maritime quarter in the Eastern harbour, where there are several restaurants.
If you want to get out on the roads already on the first day, a bike excursion to Järsö will be perfect, along one of the most beautiful stretches of road in Åland. You'll bike with the sea on both sides across road banks, and can stop for a picnic in nature, or hike a nature trail.
From Mariehamn you bike North along forests, farm fields, villages and across the Färjsund bridge to Kastelholm. On your way you also pass by the Jomala church, believed to be one of the oldest in Finland. You can also make a detour to the Stallbacken brewery pub and sample some locally produced beer together with a tasty lunch.
The Kastelholm castle has been an important part of Åland since the middle ages, and nowadays serves as one of our most important visitor attractions. Mighty kings and queens would visit here with their courts, and the castle was also the place for cruel witch hunts during the 17th century. In the area you find museums and restaurants. Accommodation at Kastelholms Gästhem.
If you enjoy biking along these country roads, we suggest a detour from Kastelholm to the fortress ruins in Bomarsund. This Russian Czar was finishing construction of this huge sea fortress, when the British and French navies launched an assault with heavy sea bombardment and then landed troops to take the fort. After the Russians surrendered, the fortress was destroyed, but the ruins still impress!
Easy biking back to Mariehamn from Kastelholm. On the way, we recommend a detour to the Önningeby museum, where they exhibit fine art by Ålandic painters - both contemporary and past.
If you've reserved the return trip with us, your ship from Mariehamn will depart in the afternoon and arrive at port in Stockholm or Turku in the evening. If you lost any weight exercising, you can regain it on the Smörgåsbord buffet onboard. If you're not ready to leave yet, we're happy to book another night in Mariehamn.
