Bicycle tour: Main Åland Island

Our newest bicycle tour for 2026 goes around the largest of the Åland Islands, known as "Fasta Åland" (the Main Island). The tour is perfect for those who want to set their own daily pace and prefer to cycle more and take the ferries less. You start in Åland's only town, Mariehamn, where you arrive by modern cruise ship from Stockholm or Turku. The first night is also spent at Strandnäs Hotell here in the beautiful little port town, so you can rest, if you've travelled from afar. The town has much to offer in terms of maritime culture, restaurants, and entertainment. If you're keen for more cycling right away, we recommend a bike trip to the Järsö nature reserve.

From Mariehamn, you'll cycle the next day on new bike paths to Eckerö on Åland's west coast. You'll stay at the pleasant Nalles Gästhem. One of Åland's main attractions, the Eckerö Post and Customs House, is nearby – as well as the Åland Hunting and Fishing Museum.

On the third day, you'll head north to Geta, and on the way, you'll take the Silvana bicycle ferry, which we have pre-booked for you. In Geta, you'll have the opportunity to visit the Geta rocks, which are characteristic for the rigid Northern Ålandic nature. Then you'll continue until you reach the hotel Havsvidden on the Northern coast. From here on the Baltic sea is uninterrupted for hundreds of miles of harsh waters.

From Geta, you'll continue on country roads through apple orchards to Kastelholm, where you can visit Åland's biggest tourist attraction: the Kastelholm Castle. Virtually all cyclists who come to Åland pay a visit here. Your accommodation is nearby at Kastelholms Gästhem.

On the last day, you have a short pedal back to Mariehamn. If you'd like a bit of extra cycling before leaving Kastelholm, a trip to the Bomarsund fortress ruins is a great option.

Day 1: Arrival

Mariehamn

You travel in the morning by cruise ferry to Åland from Stockholm, Turku or Grisslehamn. The journey takes 3-6 hours, and on board you can enjoy the sea view and a nice sea breakfast or brunch.

Upon arrival in Mariehamn in the afternoon, you pick up your bikes next to the ferry terminal. A short walk from the ferry terminal is the Åland Maritime Museum and the large four-masted sailing ship Pommern, which is docked alongside.

Accommodation is at Strandnäs Hotell, about 2km from the city center. You will have plenty of time to explore this lovely little summer town and its restaurants, cafés, nature areas, and nightlife. The Maritime Quarter in the Eastern Harbour is particularly popular with evening visitors.

Day 2: 39km cycling

Eckerö

After breakfast at the hotel, you'll get on your bikes and start your journey west to Eckerö. Most of the route is on a separate, paved bike path. You will cycle past fields and through forests, with the pretty lake Långträsk about halfway.

In Eckerö, you can visit the Åland Hunting and Fishing Museum in Käringsund to learn about the traditional Åland way of life. These industries have always been of great importance to the people of Åland, ever since the first seal hunters made their first landfall here in the Stone Age.

You will stay overnight at the pleasant and comfortable guesthouse Nalles in central Eckerö. If you'd rather cycle a bit extra, we can book you into modern cabins at a more remote resort. Here you'll find Åland's best sandy beach, complete with a beach bar and sauna - as well as a restaurant.

Day 3: 46km cycling

Eckerö to Geta

After breakfast, you can take a short trip to the Eckerö Mail and Customs House, a stately building that the Russian Tsar let build in 1828 to impress the Swedish king on the other side of the sea. You will surely be just as impressed by the architecture, and inside there is a café and an art exhibition on the upper floor.

From Eckerö, you cycle north towards Geta in northern Åland, past the old military outpost Sålis, where you can take a break to climb the lookout tower. Along the way, you will take the bike ferry M/S Silvana, which we will pre-book for you to bring you to Geta. Once in Geta, you check into cozy accommodation. Depending on the day of the week, you can also take a boat trip to the island Sälskär and its beautiful lighthouse.

The nature of Geta is more rocky than the rest of Åland, and on your way you can turn up to Soltuna to visit the hiking trails in the Geta Hills, as well as the Djupvik Grotto. Your biking continues through forested areas until you reach the Havsvidden hotel, on the majestic North coast.

Day 4: 34km cycling

Kastelholm

After breakfast, you cycle past apple orchards, lakes, and varied terrain until you reach Kastelholm. Before you arrive, you can visit a nature reserve to see the blossoms, stop to sample beer at the local brewery pub Stallhagen, visit the Åland Photographic Museum, and of course, the restaurants and cafés we recommend. If you travel in the end of July, you can take a detour through Kvarnbo to visit the Viking market, and go berzerk!

Kastelholm Castle is one of Åland's most visited attractions. The first castle was built in the 14th century, and it has housed Nordic kings and queens, and Eric XIV was imprisoned here by his brother. The castle has been involved in various political conflicts during the Middle Ages and has burned down several times. There are several museums adjacent to Kastelholm Castle. During the summer, guided tours of the castle are included in the admission fee. You will stay comfortably at Kastelholms Gästhem near the castle.

Day 5: 25km cycling

Back to Mariehamn

From Kastelholm, the country road continues south back to Mariehamn. On the way, you will cycle over the high Färjsundet bridge and through a small tunnel. After the tunnel, you can have a cup of coffee and enjoy the view from Uffe på Berget.

The journey continues through Jomala. For those interested in history and architecture, a stop at Jomala Church, believed to be one of the oldest preserved stone churches in Finland, is a good idea. Next to it is a burial ground from the Iron Age.

Mariehamn

In Mariehamn, you return your bikes to the rental shop and take your return ferry if you have one booked. The town is lovely to cycle or walk around in the summer, so if you would like an extra night here, we are happy to help arrange it. This would also give you time for a bike trip to the scenic Järsö, south of the town.
